Port Ellen 1978 44 Year Old Gemini Set Original Cask & Remnant Cask
After standing silent for more than 40 years, Port Ellen marked its return with this impressive new release. Gemini is a set of two extraordinary single malts, each matured for 44 years. These whiskies were drawn from three outstanding European Oak casks filled in 1978 and split into two, which over the years, took diverging paths of maturation.
Port Ellen Gemini Original is an impressive single malt matured in European oak butts for longer than any previous release from this iconic distillery. You can expect notes of seaweed and baked orchard fruit, leading to bonfire smoke and iodine.
The second of these whiskies was matured in a ‘remnant cask’, a vessel that measures excess spirit from a filling run. This Port Ellen remnant cask, salvaged by a group of Islay distillers upon the closure of Port Ellen in 1983, has been safeguarded for four decades. The cask is likely to have touched some of the distillery’s most historic whiskies and added notes of tobacco, sawdust and caramel to the single malt’s fruity and smoky character.
