Talisker 44 Year Old
The limited-edition Talisker 44 Year Old Forests of the Deep is the second prestige release in the Xpedition series from Talisker. Produced in collaboration with the marine conservation charity Parley, it was created using oak staves from Talisker that were taken on an expedition to the underwater sea kelp forests off the Cape of Good Hope.
Talisker Forests of the Deep comes from a small batch of 44-year-old Talisker finished in ten refill American and European oak hogsheads and butts that incorporated the staves. The barrels were then recharred with shavings from worn oak staves and a small amount of sustainably sourced Scottish sea kelp.
This limited edition of the Talisker 44 Year Old Xpedition II Forests of the Deep is available worldwide in just 1,997 bottles.
Official Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep clear amber, excellent beading.
Nose: Mellow overall, with a light peppery prickle at first. deep, dense and complex. The top notes speak of wood wreathed in fragrant smoke and rich maritime hints of ships and the sea, as enticing traces of seaweed, salt crystals, and warm sand mingle with sweeter hints of rich toffee.
The palate: a big, wonderfully oily smooth texture and mouthwatering umami-rich taste, as waves of smoky sweet rich intensity meet the full force of the sea mid palate. The effect becomes savoury and lightly drying as a delicious peppery warmth surges forward to embrace these smooth, rich flavours of the deep.
Finish: really long, with soft traces of candle wax as a sweet chilli-pepper warmth suffuses the palate, becoming mouth-cooling if water is added.
