Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old
Nikka Yoichi 10 year old is a Japanese single malt whisky. Yoichi was the first distillery built by Japanese whisky guru Masataka Taketsuru after his departure from Suntory in the 1930s and still uses the traditional coal-fired distillation process to make their delicious medium-peated malt whisky.
Worldwide fans of Japanese whisky will be ecstatic to learn that beverage giant Nikka, which produces whisky from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries as well as world blended expressions like the enormously popular Nikka From The Barrel, has recently announced the return of one of their finest age statement whiskies: the Yoichi 10 Year Old.
This whisky hasn’t been produced in years; it was stopped at the start of the now well-known Japanese whisky drought. Nikka was one of the companies at the time that was hardest hit by the supply and demand problems, and they abruptly stopped making a number of expressions, especially those that included an age-statement.
The wonderful Yoichi 10’s return is fantastic news for whisky lovers for a couple of reasons: first, it’s a great expression we’ve missed, and second, and perhaps most importantly, it may be a sign that the whisky shortage is finally coming to an end, at least as far as Nikka is concerned.
