Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old
Nikka Yoichi 10 year old is a Japanese single malt whisky. Yoichi was the first distillery built by Japanese whisky guru Masataka Taketsuru after his departure from Suntory in the 1930s and still uses the traditional coal-fired distillation process to make their delicious medium-peated malt whisky.
Worldwide fans of Japanese whisky will be ecstatic to learn that beverage giant Nikka, which produces whisky from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo Distilleries as well as world blended expressions like the enormously popular Nikka From The Barrel, has recently announced the return of one of their finest age statement whiskies: the Yoichi 10 Year Old.
This whisky hasn’t been produced in years; it was stopped at the start of the now well-known Japanese whisky drought. Nikka was one of the companies at the time that was hardest hit by the supply and demand problems, and they abruptly stopped making a number of expressions, especially those that included an age-statement.
The wonderful Yoichi 10’s return is fantastic news for whisky lovers for a couple of reasons: first, it’s a great expression we’ve missed, and second, and perhaps most importantly, it may be a sign that the whisky shortage is finally coming to an end, at least as far as Nikka is concerned.
The Yoichi 10 Year Old was a firm favorite among Japanese whisky connoisseurs all around the world before it was discontinued. It was the iconic age-statement bottle from Nikka’s first distillery, which the great Masataka Taketsuru established in 1939. Thousands of people both inside and outside of Japan frequently drank it.
Now that it has returned, you must be wondering if it will be as good as it was before. Well, we’re happy to tell you the Yoichi 10 is returning in all of its glory.
You can expect plenty of fruits on the nose, with dried berries, gentle poached pears and sweet peach combining perfectly with hints of vanilla, nutmeg and building peat smoke. The palate arrives with more peat smoke that is followed by soft oak and more juicy fruits, before the finish lasts for a medium length with rich oak, peat and creamy vanilla.
It’s a truly expertly crafted expression that we can’t wait to get our hands on once again.
The Yoichi 10 will return to the Hokkaido distillery store in the latter part of July, but it won’t be sold there until November.
Dekanta will be giving international shipping on a small quantity of bottles in early December in order to make sure everyone can get their hands on this wonderful release.
If you want to be among the first to try this legendary Japanese whisky that is coming back, place an order online right away, and we’ll deliver it right to your door when it becomes available.
